Although Gates ranks among the world’s richest individuals, he still makes practical property decisions. In this case, he is selling a smaller home that likely served a strategic purpose for decades. The sale reflects refinement rather than retreat.
A quiet lakeside property with lasting appeal
The home dates back to the 1950s. However, owners have carefully updated it over time. The cottage features four bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms, and about 2,780 square feet of living space. It sits on a hillside with sweeping views of Lake Washington.
Gates bought the property in 1995 for roughly $1 million. At the time, he had recently married Melinda French Gates. However, there is no public record of the couple living there. Instead, the purchase supported privacy around the main estate.
Inside, the house offers a warm and traditional feel. Arched doorways frame the living spaces. Oak floors add character throughout. Meanwhile, large windows flood the rooms with natural light.
