Elon Musk is no stranger to controversy. His public image often comes wrapped in the headline-grabbing moments that land him in debates across popular culture and politics. Amid the noise, it’s easy to lose sight of his actual day-to-day work. If you’ve ever wondered, “Which companies does Elon Musk actually own, and what does he do at each of them?” you’re in the right place.

Musk’s entrepreneurial journey spans nearly three decades, beginning in 1995 with his first startup, Zip2. Since then, he has built an empire that touches everything from space travel to artificial intelligence to the future of driving. By 2025, he’s even projected to enter the political realm, taking on a role in the Trump administration to lead the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—though only time will tell what that actually means.

Before diving in, here’s a quick snapshot of what we’ll cover:

Contents:

  • Which Companies Has Elon Musk Founded?
  • Which Companies Does Elon Musk Own?
  • Which Companies Does Elon Musk Run?

Feel free to quiz yourself—maybe even try some trivia questions later to see how much you’ve learned!

Which Companies Has Elon Musk Founded?

Musk has founded eight major companies, each reflecting a bold vision for the future. Below they are, in chronological order:

  1. Zip2 (1995)
Musk’s entrepreneurial story kicked off with Zip2, an online business directory that helped newspapers offer city guides. Compaq purchased Zip2 in 1999, setting Musk on his path as a successful entrepreneur.
  2. PayPal (1999)
Musk cofounded PayPal, a financial services platform that revolutionized online payments. He left in 2000. Though he’s no longer involved, PayPal remains a household name in digital transactions.
  3. SpaceX (2002)
Established to make space accessible and eventually enable life on other planets, SpaceX is known for reusable rockets, the Starlink satellite network, and missions to the International Space Station. Its ultimate dream: to reach and colonize Mars.
  4. Tesla, Inc. (2004)
Musk joined Tesla as a cofounder to reimagine the automotive industry with electric vehicles and clean energy solutions. Named after inventor Nikola Tesla, the company now leads in EV design, sustainable energy storage, and solar products.
  5. OpenAI (2015)
Along with several notable figures in tech, Musk cofounded OpenAI to ensure that artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. Although he’s no longer involved, OpenAI has since developed cutting-edge AI systems, including the GPT models powering advanced chatbots.
  6. Neuralink (2016)
Neuralink aims to bridge the gap between artificial intelligence and the human brain. Its brain-machine interfaces have the potential to treat neurological conditions and may one day enhance human cognition.
  7. The Boring Company (2016)
Initially a subsidiary of SpaceX and later spun off, The Boring Company focuses on solving urban transportation woes by building underground tunnels. Projects like the Vegas Loop are designed to reduce traffic and improve city infrastructure.
  8. xAI (2023)
Founded in tandem with his registration of X Corp, xAI is Musk’s latest AI venture. The company has released various Grok AI chatbot models, now available to X Premium subscribers.

Which Companies Does Elon Musk Own?

Ownership isn’t always cut and dried. Musk doesn’t fully own any one company outright, but he maintains substantial stakes in several:

  1. The Boring Company
Musk owns over 90% of The Boring Company. SpaceX has a small share (around 6%) due to the resources it contributed.
  2. X Corp. (Formerly Twitter)
After acquiring Twitter in 2022 for $44 billion and rebranding it as X, Musk holds about 79% ownership. His leadership has led to changes in the platform’s policies and user experience.
  3. xAI
Forbes estimates Musk’s ownership in xAI at around 54%.
  4. SpaceX
Musk owns approximately 42% of SpaceX’s equity but wields about 79% voting control, giving him significant influence over the company’s direction.
  5. Neuralink
While founded by a team, only Musk and cofounder Dongiin Seo remain as of 2022, with Musk as the majority owner.
  6. Tesla, Inc.
Tesla is publicly traded, and while Musk is its largest individual shareholder, he only holds about 13–15% of the company’s stock.

Musk also once owned SolarCity (founded by his cousins), which Tesla acquired in 2016 to bolster its energy division.

Which Companies Does Elon Musk Run?

Owning shares isn’t the same as running day-to-day operations. Musk’s level of involvement varies across his ventures:

  1. Tesla, Inc.
Musk serves as CEO and product architect, guiding everything from vehicle design (like the Model 3 and Cybertruck) to solar products (like Solar Roofs and Powerwalls).
  2. SpaceX
As CEO and chief engineer, he oversees long-term strategy, designs rocket architectures, and pushes for innovations like the Starship project.
  3. The Boring Company
While there’s a management team, Musk sets strategic priorities and champions the broader vision of tunneling as a transformative transport solution.
  4. X Corp.
Musk stepped back from the CEO role by appointing Linda Yaccarino in 2023. He now serves as executive chairman and CTO, focusing on product development and technology.
  5. xAI
At xAI, Musk is the CEO, leading the charge in AI development and strategy.

Honorable Mention: The Musk Foundation
Musk and his brother, Kimbal, head the Musk Foundation, a charitable organization rather than a traditional company. Through it, they support various philanthropic initiatives.

Ultimately, Musk’s influence stretches well beyond his public persona. Whether you admire him, criticize him, or land somewhere in between, there’s no denying that the companies he’s founded, owns, and runs have reshaped entire industries—and may continue to do so for decades to come.
