Dubai is embarking on a large-scale, multi-faceted transport transformation aimed at addressing the growing traffic congestion that has become an increasing challenge for the city. With rapid population growth, expanding commercial areas, and a rise in visitors, the need for an efficient, future-proof mobility solution has never been more urgent. To tackle these challenges, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is rolling out a series of ambitious infrastructure projects that aim to reshape Dubai’s transport landscape over the coming years.

Dubai Metro Blue Line: The Backbone of Urban Connectivity
One of the cornerstones of Dubai’s transport expansion is the highly anticipated Dubai Metro Blue Line, a new addition to the city’s metro network that promises to revolutionize urban mobility. Scheduled to open in 2029, the Blue Line will provide critical connections between key urban districts, further strengthening the metro network’s capacity to handle increasing passenger numbers.
The Blue Line will consist of two major routes. The first will span 21 kilometers, running from Creek Interchange Station through key areas such as Dubai Festival City, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Ras Al Khor, before ending at Academic City. This route will feature 10 stations, including an underground interchange. The second route will cover 9 kilometers, running from Centrepoint Interchange Station in Al Rashidiya to International City, passing through Mirdif and Al Warqa.
The new metro line is expected to accommodate over 320,000 passengers daily, significantly alleviating pressure on existing metro routes and easing road congestion. In addition, the project includes the construction of a new metro depot at Al Ruwayah 3 to ensure the line’s long-term operational readiness.
Gold Line: Expanding Metro Coverage
Further expanding Dubai’s metro network, the RTA is also working on the Dubai Metro Gold Line, set to address congestion in key areas while improving connectivity between Dubai’s older and newer districts. The proposed Gold Line will run from Al Ghubaiba in Bur Dubai, passing through Business Bay, Meydan, Global Village, and Dubailand, offering better accessibility between traditional city centers and new developments on the outskirts.
This project will alleviate traffic on the Red Line and provide enhanced connectivity to areas that have seen significant real estate growth in recent years. Upgrading Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station: Increasing Capacity to Meet Demand
As one of the busiest stations on the Dubai Metro network, Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station handles a large volume of passengers, particularly during peak seasons such as New Year’s Eve, religious holidays, and major city events. To keep pace with surging demand, the RTA has partnered with Emaar Properties to expand the station’s capacity.
The expansion will increase the station’s total area from 6,700 square meters to 8,500 square meters. Planned upgrades include improved station entrances, expanded concourse and platform areas, additional escalators and lifts, and a more efficient layout of entry and exit gates. These enhancements will significantly increase the station’s passenger handling capacity from 7,250 passengers per hour to 12,320 passengers per hour, boosting daily capacity to 220,000 passengers.
The Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station is a critical transit hub for both residents and tourists, and the expansion ensures that it can continue to serve as a central node in the city’s metro network, providing seamless connectivity to one of Dubai’s most iconic landmarks.
Dubai Harbour Bridge: Enhancing Connectivity to Waterfront Destination
Another major infrastructure project nearing completion is the Dubai Harbour bridge, which will improve access to the Middle East’s largest yacht marina and waterfront destination. With 65% of construction already completed, the 1,500-meter bridge will connect Sheikh Zayed Road to Dubai Harbour, enhancing access to this key commercial and leisure area.
The bridge is designed to significantly reduce congestion and improve traffic flow. Once completed in the third quarter of 2026, the bridge will have the capacity to handle up to 6,000 vehicles per hour, cutting travel time along the corridor from 12 minutes to just 3 minutes. The project also includes at-grade improvements at four major intersections, further easing traffic congestion across the region.
Airport Access: Improved Bridges and Expansions
Smoother access to Dubai International Airport is also a priority for the RTA. In partnership with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP), the RTA has inaugurated a major expansion of the bridge leading to Terminal 1, increasing the number of lanes from three to four. This will raise the bridge’s capacity from 4,200 vehicles per hour to 5,600 vehicles per hour, resulting in reduced congestion and shorter journey times for airport users.
Given that Dubai International is one of the busiest airports in the world, these improvements are crucial for maintaining the city’s efficiency as a global travel hub. The expanded bridge will ensure better access to one of the world’s most important aviation gateways, enhancing the overall experience for travelers and improving logistical connectivity.
Oud Maitha and Sheikh Rashid Corridors: Major Road Upgrades
In addition to metro and bridge projects, the RTA is making significant progress in upgrading major road corridors. The Oud Maitha and Al Asayel Street Development Project, which is 60% complete, is part of the Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development initiative aimed at modernizing road infrastructure to accommodate the city’s expanding population.
This project will enhance connectivity between Al Asayel Street and Al Khail Road, providing easier access to densely populated areas and key business districts. The improvements will also include four major intersections and 4.3 kilometers of bridges, with plans to extend roads by 14 kilometers. Once completed, the upgraded corridor will serve more than 420,000 residents by 2030, alleviating congestion in some of the city’s most critical traffic hotspots.
Sheikh Zayed Bin Hamdan Corridor: A Major Capacity Boost
The RTA has also awarded a contract for the development of the Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street intersection with Al Awir Road and Al Manama Street. This project includes the construction of 2,300 meters of bridges, expanded traffic lanes, and the paving of service roads in both directions. Once finished, the road’s capacity will increase by 176%, from 5,200 vehicles per hour to 14,400 vehicles per hour, dramatically reducing travel time from 20 minutes to just 5 minutes.
This project is expected to serve over 600,000 residents and visitors and will further strengthen the city’s road network to keep pace with population growth and urban expansion.
