William and Kate’s new home is Forest Lodge, a grand Georgian mansion nestled in Windsor Great Park. The house, valued at $22 million, marks a fresh start for the royal couple and their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. It is just four miles from their previous residence, Adelaide Cottage, and has eight bedrooms, a massive upgrade from the four-bedroom Adelaide Cottage.
The couple’s decision to move follows a series of personal challenges since they moved into Adelaide Cottage three years ago, including Queen Elizabeth II’s death, Catherine’s cancer treatment, and King Charles’ cancer diagnosis. There was also a security scare when someone broke into the estate while the family was in residence. These events clearly pushed William and Kate to seek a change of scenery, and Forest Lodge offers that opportunity.
Forest Lodge sits in a private corner of Windsor Great Park, surrounded by woodlands. Built in the 1770s, the house has undergone several renovations over the years, most recently in 2001. Humphry Repton, a famous landscape architect, designed it. The house showcases red-brick architecture and a grand entrance hall, along with marble fireplaces, venetian windows, and intricate plasterwork.
The home suits the couple’s hands-on lifestyle. It is a short drive from Lambrook School, where their children attend. Despite its size, William and Kate will not have live-in staff, maintaining their previous setup. The property also offers room for a pool, and the couple awaits approval to add a pontoon.
Forest Lodge has a rich history. Sir Malcolm Murray and Sir William Fremantle were among its former occupants. The property’s value has risen significantly over the years, and it is currently worth around $22 million. Before the Wales family moved in, nearby tenants had to vacate Crown Estate cottages to make space for the couple.
William and Kate will personally cover the rent and any minor renovations. This move represents a new chapter for the royal family. Forest Lodge will serve as their “forever home,” offering the family a permanent residence.
William and Kate’s decision to live in Windsor reflects a shift from previous generations. While Queen Elizabeth II spent her final years at Windsor Castle, William and Kate’s choice of Forest Lodge indicates their intention to continue the tradition of maintaining a royal residence outside of Buckingham Palace.
