Eagles Songwriter J D Souther’s Former Los Angeles Retreat Listed for $5.9 Million

A stunning wood-clad home nestled in the lush canyons of Los Angeles has hit the market for $5.9 million. Once owned by legendary Eagles songwriter J D Souther, the Hollywood Hills residence blends architectural history with celebrity legacy.

Souther purchased the property in 1990 after a prolific songwriting career that produced Eagles hits like Heartache Tonight, Victim of Love, and Best of My Love. The Grammy-winning artist, also known for his relationships with music icons like Linda Ronstadt and Stevie Nicks, commissioned renowned architect Stephen Kanner to update the home’s design shortly after moving in.

Originally built in 1941, the five-bedroom residence sits on a nearly one-acre lot along Nicholas Canyon Drive. Its design features hallmark mid-century modern elements, including butterfly roofs, sloped skylights, expansive corner windows, and a blend of wood, stone, and glass throughout.

The 6,000+ square foot, three-level home boasts two connected living rooms, a luxurious primary suite with a private lounge, and additional lounge space near the home theater and wine cellar. One bedroom has been repurposed into a library, and a detached studio offers space for guests or creative work.

According to George Penner of Compass, who relisted the home, “It’s unlike most homes in Los Angeles. The privacy, natural setting, and design blend together in a very distinctive way.”

The interiors are characterized by cherry wood-framed windows, built-in furniture, and stone accent walls. Outside, the home offers multiple access points to gardens, patios, and a terraced vineyard growing Syrah grapes. There’s also a pool deck, outdoor dining pavilion, and an orchard with fig, lemon, blood-orange, and avocado trees.

The current owners, a screenwriter and a social worker, have held the property since 2006 and previously listed it for $6.9 million.

J D Souther sold the home in 2002 before relocating to Nashville, where he later appeared in the ABC series Nashville as a country music veteran. His creative legacy, however, continues to echo through this thoughtfully designed residence.

Architect Stephen Kanner, who passed away in 2010, was known for his bold, modernist approach. This home stands as one of his more restrained yet elegant renovations—a departure from his signature works like the Westwood In-N-Out Burger and his futuristic gas station design in Los Angeles.
